Abstract Objective To study the changes of plasma endothelin (ET) and calcitoningene related peptide (CGRP) levels and their clinical implication in neonates with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). Methods Dynamic variations of plasma ET and CGRP levels were measured in 36 neonates with HIE and 18 normal neonates by radioimmunoassay method. Results Plasma ET and CGRP levels markedly increased in the acute stage of HIE, especially of severe and moderate groups. ET and CGRP levels in newborn infants with HIE were reduced to normal levels in the convalescence stage. There was a positive correlation between plasma ET and CGRP levels at acute stage of HIE neonates. Conclusions ET and CGRP might be involved in the pathophysiologic process of HIE,CGRP may be play a protective role in HIE.
